Having instant access to high-speed internet services in the home is a necessity—especially if you’re a voice-actor who works from there. The way the world conducts business is changing; the voiceover industry can attest to that! Chances are you’ll be dealing with clients who’ll insist on video-conferencing, and they could be based anywhere in the world—from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. You’ll need to have (as well as maintain) an online presence, and you’ll be paging through thousands of web pages every year.
What’s your download/upload speed? Lower download/upload speeds translate into slower web performance, which may adversely affect your ability to function as a talent. If you wish to use Skype as communication tool or download large files from an FTP (file transfer protocol) server, it may complicate matters and cause frustration for both you and your client. Time-sensitive material could get delayed—even miss a delivery deadline, and that’s the very worst thing that can happen to you. While file sharing websites like Dropbox have made life much easier for voice-actors, their usefulness is pretty much dependant on access speed.
We’ve mentioned this before, but in the final analysis, time is definitely money; never forget that. If you save your client time, you’re saving your client money. From his or her perspective, nothing is a bigger deal than that. In fact, it might just get you more work. Saving people time will also make them consider paying you more. So what’s not to like?
Bottom line: get dependable, high-speed internet. It’s an absolute must!
